Boswellia: Stop inflammation the natural way

So, what is it?

Boswellia is a gum resin frequently used in ayurvedic medicine. Its active ingredient, called boswellic acid, is a strong inhibitor of diverse inflammatory cytokines, one of them being the famous 5-LOX. Boswellia’s strong anti-cancer activity should be outlined too. Boswellia doesn’t cause cancer cells to die but is able to block their reproductive mechanism.

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease: Six studies have shown very high efficacy in the treatment of both diseases. Boswellia is more effective than sulfasalazine in the treatment of UC and CD. In our opinion, both diseases should be treated with high doses of boswellia from the very beginning, due to its benefits and low risk of side effects.

Microscopic Colitis: A study showed that ingestion of boswellia is more useful than placebo in this disease.

Cancer: Although in humans we’ve only seen case studies, boswellia is able to stop diverse forms of cancer in animals. In humans, we’ve seen case studies in which boswellia was able to block colon, prostate, pancreatic and brain tumours. Boswellia is the second most promising natural product (after curcumin) in the treatment of different types of cancer.


Taking into account that average boswellia products contain between 30% and 65% of boswellic acids:

-Up to 3600 mg of boswellic acids per day are not related to adverse events.

-Up to 2600 mg of boswellic acids per day, the effects are dose dependent.

Therefore, the highest recommended dose would be 4000 mg/day of a product that contains 65% of boswellic acids per capsule, taken in three doses during the main meals and mixed with fatty food as this helps to improve absortion.

How to choose the best product?

Since what interests us is the active ingredient, we must find the product with the highest amount of boswellic acids per capsule. Of course we suggest avoiding products that contains less than 60% of boswellic acids. Nowadays there ase several great supplements on the internet. How to take the product:

This will depend of your purpose when using boswellia. If we want to reduce joint pain, we should look for better absortion. In this case, we should take it together with fatty meals.

However, if we want its anti-inflammatory effects in the colon, we should take it before meals with a glass of water, on empty stomach.
